Summary
The increasingly difficult economic situation in Greece and a significant fall in the number of births have resulted in an already small baby food market becoming appreciably smaller. By 2012, the market had declined by 15.9% in value and 16.8% in volume since a peak in 2008. In 2012, consumption amounted to just 4,779 tonnes, equivalent to a per capita intake of 49.1kg. Volume consumption in all major sectors is now lower than in 2006 and only the third stage milk segment has recently shown any growth. In 2012, the retail market was valued at €82 million (US$ 105 million), only 1.4% higher than in 2006. In real terms, this is equivalent to a fall of almost 15%, due not only to lower sales volumes but also to falling prices.
