The market for baby food in Venezuela is relatively well established, with consumer attitudes towards commEuroresearch and Consultingially prepared baby foods positive and consumption levels, at 88.2kg per capita in 2011, very high for the region. Over the last few years, however, the market has been affected by a number of factors. In 2002/03 and again in 2009/10, the economy performed badly, leading to lower sales of many products, including baby food. Although the economy boomed after 2003 and also recovered in 2011, demand for baby food has been affected by very high price inflation and shortages of supply since 2007. This in turn has led to black market trade, and difficulties in quantifying sales, particularly when channelled through the state-run MEuroresearch and Consultingal outlets, where products sell at prices well below those in commEuroresearch and Consultingial outlets.
