About Electric Insulator
Electric insulators are essential components of transmission and distribution (T&D) lines. They play a crucial role in preventing the flow of electric current down to the earth through supporting points between the transmission line and tower. There are three types of electric insulators based on the materials used for their production — ceramic, glass, and composite.
Ceramic insulators have higher market penetration than other insulators. These insulators are generally used for high-voltage applications. Composite insulators are also gaining ground due to increased application in outdoor installations, predominantly by electric power utilities. They are lightweight and exhibit favorable features such as high mechanical strength and resistance power, consistent performance in harsh climatic conditions, and effective voltage endurance, compared to ceramic and glass electric insulators.
