About infrared (IR) sensors
An infrared (IR) sensor emits and detects IR radiation to measure heat and detect motion. These IR sensors can be broadly classified as passive IR (PIR) sensors and active IR (AIR) sensors. PIR sensors only measure IR radiation, while AIR sensors measure and emit IR radiations.
IR sensors are integrated with different devices used in surveillance, automobiles, testing, detection, and measurement. They are used to detect radiation invisible to human eyes. IR sensors, including cooled and uncooled detectors, are extensively used in the residential, commercial, military, and industrial sectors. Uncooled IR detectors are widely accepted across these sectors because of their low price, light weight, and low power consumption.
Since IR sensors are not affected by electrical noise, their use is increasing in industrial applications. They are used to measure thermal radiation emitted from powerful motors and equipment without being in contact with them. The use of IR sensors is also increasing in surveillance systems used by the military and at residences.
Technavio's analysts forecast the global IR sensors market to grow at a CAGR of 11.14% over the period 2014-2019.
