About Intrauterine devices
Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are contraceptive medical implants used to prevent pregnancies for a long period of time. They are also known as long-acting reversible contraceptive devices. An IUD is a T-shaped device, made of flexible plastic, with a copper wire wrapped around its stem, and is considered a safe and reliable method of sterilization for women. It is inserted into the uterus, and its primary aim is to prevent the fertilization of the egg by causing changes, such as thickening or toxicity of the cervical mucus, thus preventing fertilization by a sperm. There are two types of IUDs, namely, copper IUD (containing copper) and hormone-releasing IUDs (containing the progesterone hormone). Mirena and ParaGard are some of the prominent brands available in the market.
Technavio's analysts forecast the global intrauterine devices market to grow at a CAGR of 3.44% over the period 2014-2019.
