An LCD backlight unit forms a significant component of an LCD display device. It provides illumination for the projection of an image on the screen. LCDs do not produce light; therefore, backlight units act as a light source for displaying the image. Three major types of backlight units used for illuminating LCDs are cold-cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL), white-edge light-emitting diode (LED) or LED edge, and direct LED. LED backlight units are more popular than CCFL backlight units.
