Instrument transformers are used to obtain measurements of voltage or current or both in different high voltage, high current systems such as in transmission or distribution lines or in industries. The instrument transformers convert the current or voltage at high levels to very low levels before sending it to the measuring instruments, effectively isolating the measurement devices from the high voltage or current in the line. They are extensively used for measurement, monitoring, isolation and control operations in power grids.
