InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) is set to open a second hotel in Dubai named Hotel Indigo. The leading chain of hotels has signed an agreement with Diamond Developers to launch the hotel ‘The Sustainable City’ in the UAE. The agreement was signed at this week’s Arabian Travel Market. The Sustainable City’ is a project by Diamond Developers and Dubai’s first sustainable integrated development and will conform to the highest commercial, environmental, and social sustainability standards. IHG would operate the grand property consisting of 170-rooms when it opens up in the first half of 2017.

The Sustainable City complex will offer a long list of amenities and facilities which are quite promising and promotes environmental sustainability. The project would include car parking space fully covered in solar panels. The under construction hotel Indigo will include residences, a “green” school, a community centre, a pool bar,  health club, an equestrian centre, a planetarium and an amphitheatre. The long list of amenities doesn’t end here. The hotel plans to have solar power to meet 100% of the building energy requirements, thus ensuring a net-zero energy building. In the pursuit of wooing tourists developers have also planned to include an organic farm which will supply all the herbs the community needs. In addition, a solar powered shuttle bus transportation service is made available to guests of the hotel, thus increasing their commuting convenience to downtown Dubai.

According to Pascal Gauvin, chief operating officer, India, Middle East & Africa, IHG, the property will pose as the Dubai’s first sustainable integrated development project and making the UAE emerging as a sustainable tourism leader.

As reported in Arabian Business, Pascal Gauvin said “The owners, the Diamond Group, are developing a city which is all based on sustainability of water, energy, waste management, and even economic sustainability. They were looking for a hotel operator and a brand, so we are developing Hotel Indigo because it’s our lifestyle boutique hotel. Every hotel is unique, there is no one that is the same. We felt this [sustainability] story is absolutely in line with what we are looking for”.

Elaborating on the alluring features offered by the hotel he further adds “The hotel will also be sustainable, in waste management, energy, with solar panels, and water management. All our water will be treated and recycled. There will be a greenfield within Sustainable City where they will grow their vegetables and herbs,”
