World Cigarettes DR Congo focuses on the extent to which the market has evolved during the last twelve years in line with changing smoking habits in DR Congo, the competitive environment and economic developments. Despite a population of 73.6 million, only 2 million are smokers, equating to 5.6% of the population aged 18 years and over. Of these, 83% are men. As a result, the cigarette market is relatively small at just 7.6 billion pieces, equating to 104 pieces per head, only 12% up on 1990 levels.
This is a market once again led firmly by BAT with SIAT (Imperial Tobacco) the other player. The latter has been losing share (down from 26.8% in 2007 to 17% currently but BAT has also lost some share with others (including JTI, PMI and Mastermind) increasing share.
