Synopsis
World Cigarettes Hungary focuses on the extent to which the market has evolved during the last twelve years in line with changing smoking habits in Hungary, the competitive environment and economic developments. The end result is an accurate and objective interpretation of market trends (since 1990) and directions, assessing underlying currents of change and projecting the market scenarios of the future, providing forecasts to 2022.
Summary
Hungarian duty paid cigarette sales have more than halved over the past 22 years as smoking prevalence has dropped from 35% to 31% over the period with only 36% of men smoking now compared with 44% in 1990. Unusually for the region, non duty paid sales are not a major problem, currently accounting for only around 3.5% of overall sales.

In 2012 PMI overtook BAT as market leader. The two companies combined account for around 43% of the market. Imperial Tobacco ranks third, with JTI a distant fourth.

A major obstacle for future growth in this market is the move by the government to limit concessions for retail outlets able to sell tobacco from July 2013. The total number of outlets to be granted concessions is expected to be 7,000, a reduction of some 37,000 outlets. As a result of this new legislation, tobacco products will disappear from supermarkets, restaurants and petrol stations.
