Summary
As in neighbouring Greece, smoking prevalence is high in Macedonia and seems to be little changed over the past 20 years with 40% of men and 32% of women smoking. Per capita consumption is high at just under 1,900 pieces and non-duty paid sales appear to be well controlled, their share down to around 6% from 30-35% in 2006.

There are two manufacturing units active in the country - Imperial Tobacco TKS and TK Prilep which is in state hands. These two plants lead the domestic market with shares of 68% and 15% respectively in 2012. Among importers, TDR ranks third although it will be under pressure following Croatia's July 2013 accession to the EU which will make its brands more expensive in Macedonia.
