Summary
The 5.8 billion piece Tanzanian cigarette market has grown by 80.3% since 1990, albeit somewhat erratically. In recent years it has been suffering from rising taxes (these were increased by 10% in 2011 and 20% in 2012) which is encouraging contraband and the use of hand rolled cigarettes, particularly in rural areas. The market is dominated by TCC which is owned by JTI. The company had 97.4% of the market in 2012 with its two leading brands - Sweet Menthol and Portsman - accounting for a combined share of 70%.
