Summary
Eire has the highest birth rate and the lowest breastfeeding levels in Western Europe and these factors helped drive growth in formula sales between 2006 and 2008. In 2009, however, baby food was hit by a sharp fall in prices, coupled with the effects of the economic crisis, which caused many mothers to be more cautious in their spending habits. This coincided with a downturn in the number of births from 2010 onwards. Although baby milks were not hit as hard as some other sectors in volume terms, the fall in average prices had a major impact. Since then, volumes have continued to decline, partly due to lower per capita consumption as a result of cuts in consumer spending, and partly due to the sustained fall in the number of births. Prices began to recover slightly in late 2010 and small increases have continued, but in some cases the prices of individual brands are still only at the 2007/08 level. Price increases are behind the small rises in the value of baby milk sales from 2010 onwards. In 2012, it is estimated that retail sales of baby milk grew by around 0.5% to €38.7 million.
