Summary
The Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA) is undertaking the Karnaphuli Road Tunnel project under the river Karnaphuli in Chittagong, Bangladesh.

The project involves the construction of a 3.4km long tunnel with a diameter of 3.05m using the Tunnell Boring Machine (TBM) Method. It includes the construction of two lanes of traffic in each direction and other related facilities, the installation of fire fighting system, communication system and security systems.

The project being implemented on public private partnership (PPP) basis.

In March 2011, China Communication Construction Company Co Limited (CCCC) Ltd and Ove Arup & Partners (Arup JV) were appointed to undertake the feasibility study on the project. The study includes conducting detailed economic and engineering investigation to ascertain the viability of the project.

In May 2012, feasibility study on the tunnel started and in November 2012, feasibility study on the tunnel was completed.

China Communication Construction Company Co Ltd (CCCC) Ltd will also undertake the construction works on the project.

In June 2014, BBA signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China government, as per the MoU, the Chinese government would construct the project.

In June 2015, CCCC was awarded US$705 million construction contract.

In September 2015, the project secured final approval from the Government of Bangladesh.

In November 2015, construction of tunnel was approved at ECNEC meeting held at NEC Conference Room.

Bangladesh Government will provide US$460 million towards funding and remaining US$620 million will be secured through a loan from Exim Bank of China.

In January 2016, signing memorandum of understanding (MoU), a commercial deal with a Chinese firm and ECNEC approval of government have been completed to start construction work.

On October 14, 2016, foundation stone laying ceremony held.

On October 19, 2016, BBA signed an agreement to appoint a team of consultants jointly led by SMEC Australia and COWI A/S, Ove Arup & Partners Ltd, ACI Limited, Development Consultants Private Limited, Strategic Consulting Group to oversee construction work and to review the detailed plan.

Construction works on necessary infrastructure, including residences for Chinese engineers and related employees has been completed.

In January 2018, main construction works commenced and are underway. It will take five years to complete the construction works.
