Previously, it was known as Cairn Resources Limited.. Capricorn Energy has assets in Bangladesh, Nepal, Northern India, Tunisia. Presently the company has acquired six exploration blocks in Greenland and one oil discovery in India at Rajasthan (Shakti North East). In Nepal and Bangladesh it has acquired total four blocks. It is headquartered in Edinburgh, the UK.
In the fiscal year 2008, the company had acquired 92% interest in the Cape Farewell 1 and 2 blocks offshore southern Greenland. The company was incorporated in the year 2006. Cairn Energy PLC, an oil and gas E&P company, entered into an agreement to acquire 9.99% interest in the company, from Dyas BV, a wholly owned subsidiary of SHV Holdings N.V., for $95 million. Following the transaction, the company will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Cairn Energy.
In August 2012, the company acquired Nautical Petroleum PLC.
