The data collected by satellites is used for applications such as agriculture, management of water resources, urban development, mineral prospecting, environment protection, forestry, border and maritime security, drought and flood forecasting, ocean resources and disaster management. As of 2015, 4,256 satellites moved along the earth's orbit, out of which, 1,419 were operational.
