About Laboratory and Handheld Raman Instruments Raman instruments are used to identify and break down the chemical composition of physical materials based on the inelastic scattering of monochromatic light obtained when the material or sample is exposed to a light source, usually a laser source. This method is called Raman spectroscopy, and it is used to provide a fingerprint by which molecules can be identified. In this process, the sample is illuminated with a laser beam, due to which electromagnetic radiation is emitted. This electromagnetic radiation is then collected, through a monochromator, with a lens. The frequency of the re-emitted photons is shifted up or down in accordance with the original monochromatic frequency called the Raman Effect. The shift in the photons provides information about vibrational, rotational, and other low-frequency transitions in the molecules of the sample. The resulting pattern obtained gives a unique fingerprint or pattern that allows the user to match it with existing patterns and identify the composition of the sample.
