About Magnesium
Magnesium is the third most abundant metal found in the earth’s crust with a valence of two, and 1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2, 3p6, 3d5, and 4s2 electron configurations. It belongs to 2A group of the periodic table with atomic number 12. It occurs in three isotopes: 24Mg, 25Mg, and 26Mg. Magnesium bonds with other elements very easily and is rarely found in the pure form. Magnesium is found in deposits of more than 60 minerals out of which brucite, carnallite, dolomite, magnesite, olivine, and talc are of commercial importance.
