About Membrane Filtration
Membranes are a type of selective barrier that are primarily used for separation or concentration of the feed stream. The feed stream is passed through the membrane that selectively allows some constituents to pass, while others are retained back on the surface of the membrane, depending on its pore size. The constituents that are allowed to pass are known as permeate and the ones retained back are known as concentrate or retentate. Different types of membrane are used in the pharmaceutical industry depending on their pore size. There are many technologies implemented for these membranes, including ultrafiltration, microfiltration, reverse osmosis, and nanofiltration.
Other membrane technologies, such as membrane contractors, electrodialysis, and pervaporation are also used, but their market shares are less.
Membrane technology has certain advantages over conventional separation technologies, like:
• Gentle product treatment
• Ease of installation and extension
• High selectivity
• Low energy consumption
However, fouling of membrane is the major disadvantage as it causes reduction in the flux hampering productivity and performance of the membrane.
