Radiation therapy equipment is used to perform radiation therapy, also known as radiotherapy or radiation oncology, which is a procedure used in the treatment of cancer. It involves delivering high doses of radiation consisting of photons, electrons or gamma rays to kill cancer cells and reduce the rate at which the cancerous cells multiply by damaging the DNA inside the tumor cells. Radiation therapy is used to treat cancers of the head and neck, bladder, and lung as well as Hodgkin’s disease. Radiation therapy can be administered in several ways. The type of therapy prescribed by oncologists depends on factors such as the type of cancer, the stage of the cancer, the size of the tumor, the position of the tumor in the body, the age of the patient, and the patient's medical history. Radiation therapy can either be given independently or in conjunction with other cancer treatments such as surgery and chemotherapy.
