Manitoba Hydro is undertaking the construction of a hydroelectric power plant in northern Manitoba, Canada.

The project involves the construction of a 695MW hydroelectric power plant with seven units and produce on average 4,400GWh of electricity across 129ha of land. The maximum height of the dams would range between 19.5m and 28m.

The project will include the construction of three dams, a powerhouse, substations, access roads and other related facilities, the installation of turbines, transformers and generators, and the laying of transmission lines.

The project also includes the construction of seven bay spillway on the south side of Gull Rapids and 23km of dykes on the north and south side of the reservoir.

In May 2011, the project received approval for development, and export deals were signed with Wisconsin and Minnesota.

In July 2012, the environmental impact statement (EIS) was submitted. In 2013, public consultations were held and secured approvals from the federal authorities.

In March 2014, BBE Hydro Constructors Ltd, a consortium of Bechtel Canada Co., Barnard Construction of Canada Ltd and EllisDon Civil Ltd, was awarded US$1,275 million construction contract.

The scope of contract covers construction of a seven-unit powerhouse, earthen structures, rock excavation, electrical and mechanical work, and the construction and removal of temporary cofferdams.

Stantec, North/South Consultants and InterGroup Consultants have been appointed as environmental consultants, AECOM, Dillon Consulting and SNC-Lavalin as design consultants, and KGS Acres to provide conceptual design for generating station and infrastructure.

Arcweld Industries has been appointed to provide welding works for pile caps, equipment repairs, rock truck box assembly and rigging modules.

In May 2014, Clean Environment Commission approved the project. In July 2014, project secured conditional approvals from the government.

On July 16, 2014, construction commenced with the ceremonial ground breaking.

In October 2014, Voith Hydro was appointed to design, supply and install seven vertical propeller turbine-generators.

In April 2015, Manitoba Hydro invited bids to supply a draft tube crane and an intake monorail crane for the project. The scope of work includes design, manufacture, delivery, installation and commissioning of the draft tube crane and the intake monorail crane and related equipment. In August 31, 2015, the contract was awarded to Canmec Industrial Inc.
