Growing environment concerns and increasing consumer awareness about eco-friendly products are factors responsible for companies to produce green products. Cement manufacturers are no exceptions. The cement industry is facing many challenges, such as scarcity of raw materials, depletion of fossil fuel reserves, and others. The production method of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) involves release of CO2 in atmosphere. The development of new methods and formulations to eliminate or reduce CO2 emissions is a need of an hour. Identifying this need, China Gezhouba Group Co., a Chinese construction and engineering company, is aiming at production of cement from household waste.

China Gezhouba has spent over $447 million this year in acquiring environment-related businesses. Nie Kai, Chairman and President of China Gezhouba, believes that investment in emerging industries such as environment-related businesses are surpassing traditional industries. He added that the company are negotiating terms for acquisition of waste disposal plant in Europe for implementation of waste management technologies.

Zhongjiecaixin, a cement factory which is a subsidiary of China Gezhouba is producing a huge amount of waste for reuse with the help of machines that can rip it apart and categorize it. Guo Chengzhou, general manager of Zhongjiecaixin, believes that the technology is the only method that can process waste without any additional pollution or ash residue. The company is approaching governments of other cities in China for acquisition of cement plants and apply same technique of processing garbage. Governments are seeking new ways to deal with growing garbage other than putting it in landfill. Zhongjiecaixin uses this urban household waste as a raw material for manufacturing high quality cement or producing alternative fuels.

The factory is striving to tackle the challenge of overcapacity by upgrading its technology and equipment to save energy and reduce emissions. This has enabled the factory to produce better quality and lower cost cement than its competitors. Guo said, “The Company produces 26 million metric tons of cement a year without inventory, standing out from the dimming cement industry.” China Gezhouba Group is developing strategies to launch industrial parks for research and development of environmental technologies.

Many reports have been published that offer insights on changing market trends in the green cement industry. Research Beam has added a report, titled, “Global Green Cement Market 2016-2020.” As per the report, the global green cement market is expected to register a CAGR of 14.95% from 2016 to 2020. The report is a helpful source of guidance for manufacturers and investors to determine current market scenario, growth opportunities, and market size by 2020.
