Summary
National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (NPHDB), a government-run pediatric hospital is undertaking the construction of New National Children’s Hospital project in Leinster, Ireland.

The project involves the construction of a seven-story, new children’s hospital and a maternity facility on 6.3ha of land. The project is to be implemented in phases.

The project includes the construction of 6,150 rooms, 1.6ha of gardens and external space, 380 individual inpatient rooms. All inpatient rooms will be single rooms, with an en-suite and a specific facility for overnight in-room accommodation for parents and 470 beds for patients, as well as a 53-bed space for family accommodation.

It further includes the construction of an emergency department, advanced diagnostics and 18 operating theaters, play areas, gardens, courtyards, a therapy facility, a hydro pool, a gym, parking facilities and other infrastructure-related facilities.

The hospital will be served by two satellite centers, one on the campus of Tallaght Hospital on the south side of Dublin and the other on Connolly Hospital on the north side of Dublin.

In November 2013, a tender was issued for the design contract for the project.

In March 2014, six design teams were shortlisted. They are IBI Nightingale and RKD Architects (IBI + RKD); BDP and O’Connell Mahon Architects; Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP) with John Cooper Architecture and Henry J. Lyons; HOK with Stanley Beaman & Sears (SBS), CCH Architects, and Bucholz McEvoy; Scott Tallon Walker Architects and Shepley Bullfinch; and Stantec and Michael Collins Architects.

In September 2014, BDP and O'Connell Mahon were appointed as architects.

In November 2014, HLM in collaboration with Coady Partnership Architects was appointed to design two satellite Children’s Centres at Tallaght and Connolly Hospitals.

In July 2015, plans were rejected due to the scale of the project. A fresh planning application was submitted in August 2015, following final consultations with stakeholders.

On September 26, 2015, NPHDB issued a tender for mechanical engineering installation works of the project with the submission deadline on November 10, 2015.

On April 28, 2016, project secured planning approvals from the An Bord Pleanala.

On July 29, 2016, Bam Civil Ltd was appointed as a demolition, site preparation and clearance work contract for the project and simultaneously, groundbreaking ceremony held on the project.

Linesight has been appointed as the project manager and the cost consultant.

In February 2017, BAM was selected as the preferred bidder for the project.

In March 2017, the project is facing opposition from the family members of children with serious illnesses, children's rights activists, Connolly for Kids and the Jack and Jill Foundation against the build at St James's Hospital.

In August 2017, BAM Building Ltd subsidiary of Royal BAM Group nv was awarded US$711 million construction contract for the project.

In October 2017, Christened Phoenix Children’s Health was selected as the name of the hospital. However, the Dublin City Council signed a letter calling for a change in the name of the new national children’s hospital.

On October 23, 2017, the groundbreaking ceremony was held at the Connolly Hospital along with the commencement of enabling works at Tallaght center.

Construction works on the main hospital are scheduled to be completed in 2021 and the Connolly center is scheduled to be operational by the third quarter of 2019, while the Tallaght Hospital is slated for completion in 2020.
