In 2012, the global viscose fiber output was about 3.69 million tons, of which, the output in China was 2.42 million with the proportion of 65.58%; the output in Western Europe and India was 400,000 tons and 348,000 tons, accounted for 10.84% and 9.43% respectively. In 2012, the production capacity of Aditya Birla Group, the world’s largest viscose fiber manufacturer, has reached about 800,000 tons; this group has established production bases in India, Thailand, Indonesia and China; followed by Lenzing Group (Austria) with the viscose fiber production capacity of 770,000 tons; this group has established plants in Austria, Indonesia, China, the United Kingdom and the United States, and also owns monopoly position in the fields of Lyocell fiber and Modal fiber.

In addition to the two manufacturers, most of other large-scale viscose fiber manufacturers are concentrated in China.

In China, the stimulus package of CNY 4 trillion investment in the end of 2008 resulted in substantial production capacity expansion of viscose staple fiber in 2010, 2011 and 2012; at present, the production capacity has reached 3.19 million tons. In 2011, a large number of new production capacities have been put into production, which resulted in a periodical oversupply, and the operating rate reduced to 65% in 2011; the operating rate was only about 75% in 2012.

This industry has been always in a loss state since 2011; with the declining of profit, the investment impulsion was weakened, and the previous under constructed production capacity has been released gradually, so the growth rate of new production capacity will reduce obviously after 2013. It is estimated that, the newly increased production capacity is 1.34 million tons from 2013 to 2015, of which, 410,000 tons will be increased in 2013 and 500,000 tons will be increased in 2014; we assume that the average annual consumption growth rate is 20%, the operating rate in this industry will reach 82% and 87% in next two years respectively, which will show an upward trend.

The viscose fiber industry is in the stage of industrial technological upgrading, which is developing towards differentiated and functional direction, the application area is also expanding continuously; the constantly characteristic and demand update of textiles and clothing also boosts the continuous development and progress of viscose fiber industry, and provides this industry with greater vitality.
