Summary
Rushmore Plaza Civic Center (RPCC), administered by the City of Rapid, is undertaking the expansion of arena in South Dakota, the US.

The project involves the construction of additional infrastructure to add 9,000 seats thereby increasing the seating capacity from 10,000 to 19,000 seats.

The new arena includes a main floor area large enough to accommodate conventions, rodeo events, basketball, trade shows, ice hockey and indoor football.

ARC International and Crawford Architects have been appointed as architects for the project.

In July 2012, Rapid City Council (RCC) proposed plans for new arena facilities with an investment cost of US$125 to US$150 million.

In December 2012, the Civic Center Board of RCC formed an 18-member committee, called the Futures Committee, to re-examine the proposal.

In August 2013, following a nine month review on the plan RCC contracted a study of designs for a new arena.

In June 2014, ARC International and Crawford Architects presented three proposals to the Futures Committee.

In July 2014, RCC considered the Civic Center Board support for the US$180 expansion proposal.

AECOM and Four Front Design Inc. have been appointed as study and design consultants respectively.

On December 2, 2014, the project secured financial approval from the Rapid City Council.

J. Scull Construction and Mortenson Construction have been appointed as EPC Contractor for the project.

In March 2015, local residents voted against the project plans to expand and upgrade the facility.

In October 2015, City of Rapid formed a task force to develop and sift through options for the project plan.

In May 2016, Rapid City Council approved the planning approvals.

RPCC is in the process of submitting new plans
