Traditionally a nation of prolific smokers, the economic crisis in Greece has encouraged smokers to take up hand rolling as a cheaper alternative to manufactured cigarettes. As a result, hand rolled cigarettes now account for 13% of all cigarettes smoked. There were signs in 2012, however, that HRT sales were in decline with a 19.5% contraction to 2,450 tonnes. Forecasts to 2022 suggests further growth in the market (+44%) with hand rolled cigarettes representing the equivalent of 4.5 billion cigarettes.
