Summary
Although cigarette sales have more than doubled in the last 22 years, they remain constrained by a large contraband element which currently accounts for around a fifth of overall sales. Per capita consumption is very low at only 62 pieces per head and of a total population of 91.2 million only 2.4 million smoke cigarettes, with affordability and the widespread use of khat (a leaf which is chewed) being the main reasons.
A substantial rise in absolute volumes is forecast for the next 10 years taking cigarette sales up to almost 9 billion pieces. However, per capita intake will remain extremely low at 74 pieces per head.
