Alpha-, beta-, and gamma-picoline are the methyl pyridine isomers of the compound. Pyridine is primarily used as a raw material for the synthesis of agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals. The compound is used to denature alcohols such as ethanol and in the synthesis of sulfapyridine, antihistaminic drugs (tripelennamine and mepyramine), and in in vitro synthesis of DNA. It is also used in water repellents, herbicides, and bactericides. Pyridine occurs in bone, low-temperature coal tars, pyrogenic oils, bituminous slate oil, and coffee oil. Oil-shale processing facilities and coke-oven works also release pyridine to the environment. It is also released while frying chicken, bacon, and cheese due to the degradation of nicotinamide and pyridoxine.
