The First Generic Version of Nexium Approved by the FDA

Generic drugs are drugs or medicines which have exactly same pharmacological effects over the disease as compared to the existing brand-name counterparts. The increasing number of patent expiration of generic drugs has paved the way for increasing demand the generic drugs across the globe.

The food and drug admiration (FDA) approved the commercialization of the first generic version of Nexium i.e. esomeprazole by Ivax Pharmaceuticals, Inc. The generic drug is manufactured to treat Gastroesophageal reflux disease in children and adults.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a disease in which the liquid or food consumed travels back up to the esophagus. GERD causes heartburn along with other symptoms and can be irritating for the suffering individual.  

FDA approved to market the drug in 20 and 40 milligram capsules. Furthermore, the new drug is also accepted by the FDA in order to reduce the gastric ulcer risks related with the usage of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It also helps in treating stomach infection and some other cases in which stomach produces excess amount of acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

“Health care professionals and consumers can be assured that these FDA-approved generic drugs have met our rigorous standards, it is important for patients to have access to treatment options for chronic conditions,” said Kathleen Uhl, M.D., director Generic Drugs Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, FDA.
