Only around 11% of Hong Kong adults now smoke regularly: one of the lowest levels in the world. The cigarette market has been subject to regular and steep tax hikes in recent years, resulting in a steep fall in duty paid consumption and a rise in non-duty paid sales. Per capita consumption of duty paid cigarettes is now 371 pieces compared with 1,283 pieces in 1990.
There is a large menthol cigarette market, accounting for more than a third of sales; Salem and Marlboro Menthol are the leading brands in the market. The sector has attracted substantial new product development and there are now a number of light menthol, ultra-light menthol, slim and super king variants. PMI has recently launched Marlboro Black Menthol and Marlboro Ice Black.
