Synopsis
World Cigarettes Laos focuses on the extent to which the market has evolved during the last twelve years in line with changing smoking habits in Laos, the competitive environment and economic developments. The end result is an accurate and objective interpretation of market trends (since 1990) and directions, assessing underlying currents of change and projecting the market scenarios of the future, providing forecasts to 2022.
Summary
As in neighbouring Cambodia, Imperial Tobacco has a strong presence in Laos with its Laos Tobacco subsidiary in which it acquired a majority stake in 2002. In 2012 Laos Tobacco held a 93.8% share, up from 71% in 2003. The cigarette market in Laos is not large although it has grown from 2.2 billion pieces in 1990 to current levels of just over 3 billion pieces. Smoking is a well entrenched habit with almost two thirds of adult males smoking although only around 15% of women smoke: both levels are little changed on 20 years ago.
