National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is planning to undertake the construction a tunnel road in Karnataka, India.

The project involves the construction of a 23.5km tunnel road. The project will include the construction of the six-lane road,10 bridges comprising five over-bridges for a distance of 3.9km, high-pier bridges covering 10km, a 2km arch bridge and access shafts and six-lane road, and the installation of safety and lighting systems.

The tunnel is being constructed using drilling & blasting method.

It will be developed on a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) has expressed interest in providing technical assistance for the project.

Geo Consultants Private Ltd (Geoconsult) has been appointed to prepare the project report and Japan International Cooperation Agency as a financial advisor.

Public Works Department, Karnataka (PDW) has been appointed as project manager.



In March 2015, the state government discussed the proposal with the Union Ministry for Road Transport and Highways.

Geoconsult has completed the social and traffic surveys.

In August 2016, the project received approval from the center to commence the study of the soil strength and underground rock strata.

In January 2018, Ocean Construction India Pvt Ltd has been awarded US$14 million contract for repair and restoration work on the project.

As of March 2018, repair and restoration work and planning activities are underway.
