Summary
The second quarter of 2015 saw a marginal increase in GDP growth, as well as household consumption. Despite these positive signs however, the industry struggled to overcome the quarter's poor weather, and subsequently commercial beverages were only able to grow by just over 1%. This tribulation was not shared by Private Label brands however, as they defied sustained promotional activity from the major brands and continued to grow, particularly in cola, achieving double-digit growth for the month of May.

Key Findings
- The economy showed weak GDP growth, but was tempered with a marginal boost in consumption

- Poor weather, cooler and wetter than usual, marred the soft drinks category performance

- Packaged water and carbonates were down by 4% and 5% respectively, with most other categories performing negatively too. The energy drinks segment however grew by nearly 9% compared with last year

- The dairy category saw some slight gains for flavored milk and cultured milk but white milk continues to decline

- All alcoholic beverages were down, affected by the poor weather, other than FABs which were able to post a small growth
