AES Distributed Energy, Inc. (AES DE), a subsidiary of The AES Corporation (AES) plans to build a solar-plus-storage "peaker plant" in Kauai County, Hawaii, the US.
The project involves the construction of a 28MW solar photovoltaic plant. It includes the construction of a 20MW five-hour duration energy storage system, a substation, and the installation of solar panels, generators and transformers, and the laying of transmission lines.
AES DE will build, own and operate the project.
On January 10, 2017, KIUC and AES DE signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the project. The power purchase agreement will sell power to Kauai at 11 cents per kilowatt-hour, significantly below Kauai’s current average cost-per-kWh, which is close to 33 cents.
The local regulatory approvals are pending. If approved, the project is expected to be completed by end of 2018.
