Scope
The project involves the construction of a 14.5km rail line along Al Sufouh Road from Dubai Marina to the Burj Al Arab and the Mall of the Emirates in Dubai, the UAE.

The US$1,400 million project includes the following:

1. Construction of 10.7km twin-track in the first phase

2. Construction of 5km track with seven stations in the second phase

3. Construction of 13 stops with a standard platform length of 44m

4. Construction of elevated tracks near the Marina

5. Installation of signaling and ticketing system
Summary
The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (DRTA) is undertaking the construction of Al Sufouh Tram project in Dubai, the UAE.

The project involves the construction of a 14.5km rail line along Al Sufouh Road from Dubai Marina to the Burj Al Arab and the Mall of the Emirates and is being executed in phases.

The first phase includes the construction of a 10.7km rail track from Dubai Marina to the Knowledge Village which includes the construction of 11 stations with a standard platform length of 44m.

The second phase includes the construction of a link between Burj Al Arab and Mall of the Emirates, with an extension of 5km and addition of seven stations to the line. 14 trams will be added to make a total of 25 operating trams.

The third phase includes the construction of a line on Jumeirah Beach Road reaching 2nd of December Street. It includes the construction of a 16.6km rail track and a 19 stations.

Systra has been appointed as the feasibility study consultant and Parsons Brinckerhoff as the design consultant for the project.

In 2008, a consortium of Alstom, Besix, and Serco Plc were appointed as the design, build and operate (DBO) contract for first phase of the project.

Earlier, the project was put on hold due to financial crisis, however, the construction work resumed in January 2011.

In February 2012, the Dubai Government received a finance of US$675 million from Citibank, Deutsche Bank and HSBC for construction of the first phase of the project.

In September 2013, Serco won the contract to operate the Al Sufouh Tramway.

On November 11, 2014, the construction works on first phase of the project completed.

In August 2016, DRTA has issues tender for consultants to study feasibility for second and third phase on the project.

In January 2017, DRTA has awarded a joint venture of Systra and Aecom a 14-month contract to support preparations for the second and third phases of the project. Scope of contract involves transport planning, preliminary design, and preparation of tender documents.

Feasibility studies along with preliminary designs are underway for second and third phase and expected to get completed by mid 2018.
