About Chlorinated Paraffins Chlorinated paraffins, also called polychlorinated ns-alkanes, are produced by the chlorination of C10-C30 n-alkanes using molecular chlorine and liquid paraffin or solvents such as carbon tetrachloride. Chlorinated paraffins can also be produced by the chlorination of alpha-olefin. The production process of chlorinated paraffins is patented by certain companies, including INOVYN. The patents exist for the use of catalysts or additives to prevent contamination, retarding the chlorination. The reaction is dependent on n-alkane and occurs between 122°F and 302°F under high pressures or in the presence of ultraviolet light. The residual chlorine and reaction products are separated from the solvent by gas sparging. Final products are mixtures that are viscous and colorless or yellowish dense oils – except for C20-C30 perchloric acids, which are solid and have a high chlorine content of approximately 70%. Medium-chain paraffins are the most preferred chlorinated paraffins, in terms of volume consumption, across the target regions. About Chlorinated Paraffins

Medium-chain paraffins are the most preferred chlorinated paraffins, in terms of volume consumption, across the target regions. This is attributable to their demand as secondary plasticizers in PVC compounding, which is the biggest end-user segment. It is followed by metal working fluids where short-chain chlorinated paraffins have been replaced by medium-chain variants due to environmental toxicity associated with short-chain chlorinated paraffins.

Technavio’s analysts forecast the global chlorinated paraffins market to grow at a CAGR of 4.44% during the period 2016-2020.
