Diatomite is the naturally occurring fossilized remains of diatoms. It is an almost pure sedimentary deposit, which is primarily composed of silica. It (diatomite) is also known as diatomaceous earth (D.E.). Key producers of diatomite include China, the US, Denmark, Japan, Mexico, and France. Diatomite exhibits high porosity, low density, high surface area, and abrasiveness. It generally contains a high amount of silica and is characterized by excellent insulation and absorption capacities. It (diatomite) is widely used as a filtration material for beer, wine, and beverages. Its microporous honeycomb structure helps in the filtration of cooking oils and sugar. Increasing use of diatomite in niche applications, pesticides, plastics, and water treatment is expected to drive the global diatomite market during the forecast period.
