A thermometer is an instrument used for measuring temperature. It consists of a narrow, sealed glass tube marked with graduations and contains mercury or alcohol through the expansion or contraction of which the temperature is measured. Other temperature measuring technologies such as infrared radiation or thermocouple may also be used for measurement. Clinical thermometers are used for the measurement of body temperature. The temperature readings can be obtained from the forehead, sublingual, underarms, or the ear.
