Summary
PT Indosmelt (Indosmelt) along with PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT) and PT Freeport Indonesia (FI) is planning to construct the copper smelting plant project in South Sulawesi, Indonesia.
The project involves the construction of a smelting plant with a capacity of 350,000TPA of copper cathode.
The project includes the construction of a processing unit, a pot regulation system, gas treatment facilities, a quality check lab, warehouses, parking facilities and other infrastructure related facilities and the installation of safety systems.
The project will produce sulfuric acid needed for fertilizer industry, 200,000 tonnes of copper slag cement and 800,000 tonnes of anode mud required for refining gold and silver.
In August 2013, FI, a subsidiary of Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold Co signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with two local firms PT Indosmelt and PT Indovasi Mineral Indonesia for the construction of smelter.
In March 2014, Indosmelt submitted the roadmap to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources as the part of planning process.
In January 2015, feasibility studies completed for the project. In February 2015, China Metallurgical Group Corporation (MCC) was appointed as the EPC contractor for the project.
In March 2015, Nerin Engineering, a subsidiary of China Non-ferrous Metal Industry’s Foreign Engineering and Construction Co., Ltd, was appointed as the lead consultant for the project.
Kalla Group has been appointed as management contractor.
Project is facing delay due to government regulatory and political issues.
