Summary
Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD) is undertaking the construction of a radioactive waste disposal facility in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang, South Korea.

The project involves the construction of a radioactive waste disposal facility with a capacity of 800,000 drums of low and intermediate level radioactive waste on 210,000m2 of land.

It includes the construction of storage units, a control room, laboratories and related infrastructure, and the installation of equipment, safety and security systems.

It is implemented in phases.The first phase includes the construction of LILW underground silo disposal with the capacity of 1,00,000 drums. The second phase includes the construction of LILW surface disposal with the capacity of 1,20,000 drums and remaining phases are yet to be revealed.

In February 2006, construction works on the first phase were commenced.

In June 2014, construction works on the first phase were completed.

In April 2014, KEPCO Engineering & Construction Company, Inc. (KEEPCO) was appointed as construction contractor for the project.

Construction activities of the surface facility is scheduled to be completed in 2019.
