Summary
Maîtrise d’Ouvrage de l’Aéroport de Donsin (MOAD), under the directive of Government of Burkina Faso, is developing the New Ouagadougou-Donsin International Airport at Donsin in Burkina Faso.

The project involves the construction of a new international airport with the capacity to handle 1.5 million passengers annually. It will include the construction of runways, passenger terminals, aircraft hangars, retail units, taxiways, and parking facilities.

The project also includes the construction of access roads to the new airport. It involves the construction of a 24.3km new two-lane paved link road with two lanes for two-wheeled vehicles from the Loumbila NR3 junction to the Nionogo NR22 junction and security barriers and the renovation of 40km existing rural roads.

The project is planned to be executed in three phases.

The first phase of the project involves the construction of a 3,500m long runway, a three-story passenger terminal on a 13,400m2 area and commercial facilities on a 3,600m2 area.

The second phase involves terminal expansion on a 1,500m2 area and other expansion facilities.

The third phase of the project involves furthermore expansion based on the projected increase in air traffic.

The Government of Burkina Faso will develop the project through public-private partnership (PPP) mixed capital Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) company, with the private sector investors likely to hold a controlling stake in the SPV.

In 2010, Mott MacDonald and Lufthansa Consulting were appointed as a feasibility study contractor.

The project will be financed by Agence Française de Developpement (AFD) (US$20 million), African Development Bank (AFD) (US$60 million), Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) (US$20 million), Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) (US$24 million), The ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) (US$7 million), World Bank (US$65 million), West African Development Bank (BOAD) (US$25 million), The Kuwait Fund for African Economic Development (FKDEA) (US$15 million), Foundation for Sustainable Development (FSD) (US$28 million), The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) (US$10 million), Qatar Diar Fund (US$15 million), Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (US$10 million), The Government of Burkina Faso (US$61 million).

In February 2014, the EPC contract for the access roads was awarded to MSF Engenharia.

In November 2014, the site preparation activities commenced for the access roads.

In May 2015, MOAD issued a pre-qualification tender for the concession contract for the construction and operation of the Airport with submission date as June 29, 2015.

In the second quarter of 2015, the construction activities commenced for the access roads.

In June 2015, the submission date for the concession contract for the construction and operation of the Airport was extended to July 9, 2015.

In September 2015, Maîtrise d’Ouvrage de l’Aéroport de Donsin (MOAD) issued a tender for the construction of fencing and runway tracks.

In January 2016, five companies from France, South Africa, Canada, and Turkey are showing interest to participate in the concession contract.

On May 26, 2016, as a part of the project, MOAD awarded the construction contract for the military base to CGE. The scope of the contract covers the construction of roads, sanitation, drinking water facilities, drainage, sewage and electricity facilities. Construction activities for the access roads are underway.

In February 2018. Ouagadougou-Donsin Airport's planned inauguration has been postponed from 2018 to 2021, according to the director general of the project Hadama Ybia.

March 2018, Construction has been completed for access routes.

The project will award its major contract tenders within the year of 2018 and construction work on the airport platform will start by the end of 2018.

The project's major construction is scheduled to start by the second quarter of 2019.

Pre-tender activities are underway for phase I, II, III.
