Summary
National Grid Interconnector Holdings Ltd (NGI), a wholly owned subsidiary of National Grid Plc, together with Landsvirkjun, the state owned generator in Iceland, and Landsnet, the Icelandic Transmission System Operator are planning to build a power interconnector from South East Iceland in Iceland to Northern Scotland in the UK.
The project involves the construction of a 1,000km underwater IceLink cable with a capacity of 800-1200MW. It includes the laying of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) sub-sea cables, the construction of onshore substations, a switch yard and related facilities.
Poyry has been appointed as consulting engineer and Kvika Bank as financial advisor.
In October 2015, the UK and Icelandic governments agreed to create an energy task force to look at the benefits of the interconnector. The results from the task-force were made public in July 2016.
Study activities are underway. Construction works are expected to be completed in 2027.
