Summary
The Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) is undertaking the construction of a smart motorway in New South Wales, Australia.

The project involves the construction of a smart motorway system between Pitt Street, Mays Hill and Russell Street, Lapstone. It includes the construction of a 36km road, 12 interchanges, pedestrian ways, and road separators and the installation of signal and safety systems. The project will be implemented in three stages.

First stage includes the widening between Roper Road and Westlink M7; the Second stage includes the civil ramp upgrades and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) installation between Roper Road and Pitt street overpass; and the Third stage includes the civil ramp upgrades and ITS installation between Russell Street and Roper Road.

Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. has been appointed as study consultant and GHD Group Pty Ltd as traffic consultant.

Adait has been appointed as a lead consultant. Adait developed Data61’s indigenous smart motorway control system, and evaluated the cost or benefit of such system for the project. Adait also carried out the case studies.

In March 2015, the feasibility study was completed.

The Review of Environmental Factors (REF) was displayed to the community from March 12, 2015 to April 10, 2015 for consultation.

On October 27, 2015, RMS secured planning approvals for the project.

On April 15, 2016, RMS invited tenders for detailed design works with a submission date of May 2016.

On September 23, 2016, Arup Bv and Amey were appointed to provide all technology and civil works, spanning from detailed design through to construction support services. The work includes field investigations, traffic and noise modelling and identification of noise mitigation.

In July 2017, RMS appointed Fulton Hogan Pty Ltd has a construction contractor.

Construction activities are underway with completion scheduled by 2020.
